Random Harvest Eco-friendly Farm

Random Harvest Eco-friendly Farm

A world away from the city we sit in, Random Harvest Farm has been our home for over 45 years. It boasts 21ha and has vast numbers of mature indigenous trees, although there are still a few exotics such as 100 year old oaks.

Habitat Types found at Random Harvest

We are quite unique in that this small area has no less than 7 different habitat types: grassland, farmland, garden, forest, thicket, savannah and wetland.  It is no wonder that the birdlife on our farm is exceptional.  Bird walks are conducted regularly, enquire at reception for the next scheduled walk. For a checklist of our species and some great birdwatching tips, read more here.

Of particular interest to ecologists is our restored grassland.  After more than 20 years of persistent restoration we have an amazing variety of plant and animal species in this area.  It can be viewed by special arrangement. Please read this article for further information: Restoration of a grassland at Random Harvest Indigenous Plant Nursery.

Things to do in Johannesburg

Random Harvest is open to the public, and the many activities we offer make us top of the list when you are looking for things to do in Johannesburg. Local and overseas visitors agree: of all the places to visit on a Johannesburg tour, make sure our farm is included in your itinerary.

A recent guest professed that if he could imagine heaven, this would be it!

Fresh Produce for our Farm

Our Italian heritage embraces the importance of having our own fresh produce – cows for milk and cream, free-range chickens for eggs, and fruit trees and vegetables.  None of the "good stuff" goes to waste, as we bottle and preserve any surplus.  Some of our customers visit purely to stock up on our delicious home-made jam.

Activities at Random Harvest Farm

There are not many places that you can observe milking cows by hand these days, but on our farm we do, and this makes us one of the best farms for visiting with children.  Our cows provide fresh milk and cream daily.  Children also love to visit the calves, and watch the chickens that roam freely on the farm.

Our farm offers many activities for families, including toddlers.  For a current list of what’s on for families and outdoor people in our part of Johannesburg, have a look at our events calendar:

  • Come and see the calves
  • Farm walks
  • Bird watching and regular organised bird walks
  • Tree Trail (Guided or do your own with our Tree Trail booklet - currently under edit so please enquire at reception)
  • Sandpit for toddlers and young children
  • 1km circuit walk

Drought tolerant landscaping & garden designs with indigenous plants

[Title]

An arid garden uses drought tolerant plants or desert plants when landscaping in an environment that receives very little rainfall, intense sunlight, and experiences fluctuating temperatures.

Indigenous South African water wise plants lend themselves well to arid garden design.
