Gardens of The Golden City - Random Harvest

Gardens of the Golden City at Random Harvest

Date & Times: 9 - 10 November, 2019, 8:30 am to 5pm

Entrance Fee: R30 per person, children under 12 free

A visit to Random Harvest's gardens over the Gardens of the Golden City weekend includes opportunities to walk on the farm, through the restored grassland and to the dam. There will be conservation gardening talks, particularly grey and rainwater harvesting. Staff are available to answer questions on indigenous gardening.

Over 800 species of indigenous plants are available to purchase from the nursery, and the Tea Garden serves great food.

Random Harvest’s garden is a wonderful example of a gradual transformation from an exotic to an almost completely indigenous garden, bar a few huge, old exotic trees. The garden features a variety of carefully created habitats for wildlife, whilst embracing good design principles and aesthetics. Birds (169 species on their list), many pollinating insects and other creatures abound in the sanctuary provided for them.

The Gardens surrounding the main house, Nursery and Farm are run on natural principles without the use of harmful pesticides, which accounts for the quantity and diversity of creatures present.

Of interest are the beautiful indigenous trees, many of which are pruned up for their sculptural value, giving a park-like effect.

Although there is space dedicated to a formal vegetable garden under shade net, some of the flower beds include vegetables, sustaining both people and wildlife within the natural garden space.
